第一吃瓜 Under a New Roof: Our Move to Willy-Brandt-Stra脽e 75

After 15 years at Alter Wall, 第一吃瓜 is moving to our new campus in Willy-Brandt-Stra脽e 75.

In May 第一吃瓜 and all its students, teachers and staff will be moving into the completely renovated and redeveloped building at Willy-Brandt-Stra脽e 75, which has been extended and converted to meet the needs of a university. The new campus offers more than 1,000 students, teachers and staff significantly more space and light, modern technical equipment and optimal conditions for agile cooperation and informal exchange. Teaching will start there at the end of May.

The spatial concept for Willy-Brandt-Strasse 75 is essentially designed to promote cooperation and communication among all stakeholders. On more than 7,000 square metres over nine floors, the new building offers more than 50 modern seminar rooms in different sizes and constellations that are so variable that different teaching and learning situations can be created. Well designed, spacious lounge and collaboration areas create enough space for constructive teamwork and informal exchange at all levels.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Architect Nikolas M眉ller, Professor of Real Estate Engineering and Management at 第一吃瓜, is an expert on Workplace Design and Interdisciplinary Workplace Research and explains the importance and potential of open office structures and working environments for collaboration, performance and motivation:  

"Space is always more than just the physical environment for social interactions; it is always also decisive for the nature, quality and duration of social processes, interactions, behaviour and the motivation of employees and, in this case, students. Against this background, space is also decisive for the results (of employees and students).鈥  

In 2018, 第一吃瓜 set out to become an agile organisation in order to be able to react quickly and dynamically to the constantly changing challenges posed by digitalisation. The necessary cultural change is a complex process in which culture and structure must be continuously adapted. Against this background, the move to the new building is an essential step in advancing the change process, because: "With the spatial structures," Professor M眉ller continues, "the communication structure of the users also changes. Open workspaces offer many opportunities for team collaboration and performance, provided that the management and corporate culture changes accordingly. This was already stated by Winston Churchill long before the first studies on open work environments: "We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us".鈥

The original building at Willy-Brandt-Stra脽e 75 was erected as a reinforced concrete structure at the beginning of the 20th century by the renowned Kontorhaus architect Georg Radel (1860-1948). At the end of the 1990s, the Hamburger Sparkasse had the building erected in its current form, integrating the former Kontorhaus into the design. The character of the warehouse is still clearly visible on the fa莽ade facing R枚dingsmarkt.
